Rare German WW2 Demjansk SHIELD badge, 1942
This item depicted in the images is a rare German WW2 campaign shield award. This badge, which was worn by personnel awarded with the item on the upper left sleeve, was issued to German soldiers who participated in the battles around the DEMJANSK pocket in Russia in 1942.
In 1942 around 95,000 German troops were surrounded in the Demjansk pocket and supported by air for several months. While the operations was successful and the Germans sustained ferocious attacks by Soviet troops it led German leadership to believe that they could support encircled troops indefinitely, leading to the Stalingrad disaster one year later.
Demjansk Shield was Instituted on April 25 1943, to commemorate the 14 month defense by 100,000 men of the the 2nd Army corps of Demjansk, a small town between Novgorod and Velikie Luki. Demjansk and Cholm were important defensive pockets during the winter retreat of 1941/42. Awards were made by the garrison commander, General Brockdorff-Anlefeldt. It is made of whit metal and was worn without a backing.
