The badge is handmade and made from Aluminum.

Very interesting detail: prototype of that trench art cross was a Badge of the 17th Don Cossack Regiment of General Baklanov – look at the screenshot from catalogue written by V. Kempf.

It is mean what volunteer in German Army earlier had relative to Russian 17th Don Cossack Regiment of General Baklanov.

The size is 54 x 53 mm (2.13″ x 2.09″).

The item is bought from Cossack family estate sale with a few other WW2 items. Their grandfather Michael  B. was in Don Cossack Regiment in Wehrmacht armee.

History: Cossacks were among the vast numbers of Soviet Soldiers who deserted to the Axis during 1941-42. In August 1942 a whole Soviet Cossack Regiment complete with officers deserted to the Germans and put themselves at their service. This unit commanded by Major Kononow became Kosacken Abtielung 102, but they were re-designated Ostlegion Kosacken Abteilung 600, finally they became the 5th Don Cossack Regiment.
